A Few Cricket Firsts


  • David William Gregory was the 1st ever Captain for Australia who played the 1st ever Test against England at the MCG on 15 March 1877. James Lillywhite(Jnr) of England was the captain of England for the Inaugural England - Australia Test at the MCG in 1877.
  • The first ever Test delivery was bowled by Alfred Shaw of England to Charles Bannerman of Australia, who later went on to become the 1st Test centurion.
  • Allen Hill of England took the 1st ever Test Catch.
  • William Midwinter of Australia picked up the first ever 5-wicket haul in the history of Test Cricket and ended up with figures of 5/78.
  • John Blackham of Australia became the 1st wicket-keeper in Tests to get a batsman out, stumped.
  • India played their 1st ever Test on 25th June 1932 against England, at Lords. India was captained by CK Nayudu.
  • Mohammad Nissar of India took the 1st ever 5-wicket haul for India in Test Cricket and ended up with figures of 5/93.
  • Amar Singh scored the 1st ever 50 for India in Test Cricket.
  • Mike Atherton was the first English player to be fined for misconduct.
